3 days Devotional for New Dads

Devotional title: Help! I’m a new dad

Day 1: Fatherhood can be learn from Abba Father

Luke 22:42, John 11:41, Psalm 119:11, James 1:5

One of the most beautiful journey in the life of a man is the experience of birthing a new child. The arrival of a new baby can bring so much joy. Just like every other victory,  being a new dad comes with it’s own peculiar challenges but you can overcome them. The bible says this is the victory that has overcome the world,  even our faith (1John 5:4 NIV). This means we need faith to overcome just about any challenge in life.

While social media may fill you with anxiety of handling the mother of your child, your child, and then yourself,  God’s word is filled not just with hope but practical wisdom that can help you to have a super memorable experience as a new dad.

The first thing you need to know is that God is a father, and being a father means he understands everything you go through as a new Dad. He’s not just a father to one, He is a father to many children. He has been a father from time immemorial.  Imagine how God is so much of a father to all of humanity, that is huge. What that means is that you can trust whatever God tries to teach you about fatherhood through is word.

The most important place to lean in as a new father is God’s word, the scriptures.  Pray every day and ask God to show you your ‘now’ word. As you pray, ask the Holy Spirit to teach you how to navigate this season, pray for wisdom,  as you do this, you will be led to the word you need. Don’t just read through,  pause and meditate on the word. As you practice this, you’d realize that God is with you on your journey as a new dad. Fatherhood begins in one day but it’s a journey that may last for your life time. The good news is that God’s word is eternally available for you to navigate your journey of fatherhood.

Day 2:

How to love your wife who is a new mom

 2 Corinthians 12:9, Romans 5:8

Previously,  we learn that God is a father and through God’s word, you can get help and wisdom to navigate your journey as a new Dad no matter how challenging things may seem.

As a new father, one of the most inevitable experiences you may have is that your wife will be a different person in many ways. She will most likely need to eat more which will place a higher demand on you to help. It will also place more demand on the finances of the home. You both may have to deal with sleepless nights and rusty mornings from sleep deprivation. Some women become cranky and touchy, that is not exciting to know but it can be the reality in many homes. Most women are like this not because they want to but because they are dealing with myriads of emotions themselves. It is not an easy place to be, when you have to love and keep giving to a woman who is not especially pleasant in her behavior. However, we must remember that Christ tells husbands to love their wives as Christ loves the church. Christ, our perfect example didn’t love us when we were perfect, He loved us while we were yet sinners. It won’t be easy but God’s grace is sufficient for you.

There are many ways to go about this as a new dad. In addition to prayer and study of the word,

you may want to have a conversation with your wife about how she needs your support. This is not a season to assume. There may be ways she needs you that you may not be able to understand.  You can do your personal research on how to be a great husband to her and how to be a great dad to your new baby. However,  the most important person who can tell you how she wants to be treated is your wife, so ask her.

You can also trust the Holy Spirit to lay hints in your heart and also constrain you about how to treat your wife this season. As you pray for your home and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance, you’d be led.

Day 3: Being a great new Dad

Philippians 4:6

Previously,  we learn about the need to love your wife who is also trying to navigate being a new mom without a manual as you are too.

As a new Dad, you’d also experience the joys of a new child as well as the unique challenges that comes with nursing and nurturing them well. This will demand a lot of your time as well as your finances.  This has to be  well handled so that it does not cause unnecessary strain in your home.

You would need to grow in trusting the Lord and not be anxious when you don’t understand something you notice in your baby or new born. If you experience anything with your baby that brings you anxiety,  remember the scriptures that say we should be anxious for nothing but make our request known through prayer. The first thing a parent experiences is fear when they notice a concern with their baby, that is a normal response. As a believer we need to take our human experience further by confessing the scripture till faith is stirred in our hearts. When we grow in faith, our response to things that should naturally cause fear or anxiety will be faith.

This is a season where the word of God must be readily available for withdrawal toward any situation or circumstances that want to shake your faith. As a father, you are the priest of your home. It may be tough, but more than ever, this is a season to pray without ceasing. As you pray, no weapon formed against you shall prosper. If your wife can’t pray as long or as much as she does before becoming a mum, this is the time to stand in the gap and nurture her altar back to fervency.

Confession: I am a great Dad to my child. I am a great husband to my wife. I enjoy wisdom to manage both roles effectively. I am prompt with the promptings of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus name, Amen.
