Pap is a common staple in Nigerian homes. People make a smooth custard-like paste from grains, and then it is consumed as pap. The most popular grains used for making pap is corn, millet, and guinea corn. People have gone ahead to fortify pap to their taste and nutrition by adding ginger, cloves, potatoes, etc.
A lot of people sieve the mixture after grinding to ensure a very smooth and melting taste in the mouth. While this may be the popular way of having pap, it’s best sieved. Here are some of the reasons why pap should be consumed when it is not sieved.
- Sieving the pap mixture will lead to loss of a significant portion of the nutrients you’d otherwise have. The best practice is to take the soaked grains to an industrial machine or very strong blenders that can blend the grains into a smoother paste. That way, you are able to enjoy the full nutrients of the pap.
- Eating the pap without sieving keeps the fiber. Fiber content in food is one the main ingredients that aids digestion. Sieving out a pap means you’re taking out some of the fiber content that could have supported your bowel movement and aid digestion.
- Having your pap without sieving saves you the physical labor of sieving. Why go through all that stress when you can just have your pap as it is!
